Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Our Lady of Perpetual Help

27 June
OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP

The painting of the Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help was transferred from Crete to Rome in the fifteenth century, where it became famous for great favors. In the nineteenth century, the cult expanded to the entire Church.

----------

The Proper Mass texts (except the Preface) and readings are the same used at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Baclaran, Paranaque City.

COLLECT
Gracious and loving God,
you have given us Mary,
the Mother of Jesus your Divine Son
to be our Mother of Perpetual Help.
May her powerful prayers bring us protection from danger
and freedom from sin
that we may come to the joy of your peace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading
The maiden will bear the Son

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 7, 10-17

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: ‘Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on your ancestral house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria.’

The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 71 (70), 1-2. 3-4a. 5 & 12 (R.: por. 12)

R. Help me O Lord in my distress.

In you, O LORD, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
In your justice rescue me, and deliver me;
incline your ear to me, and save me. R.

Be my rock of refuge,
a stronghold to give me safety,
for you are my rock and my fortress. R.

O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked.
For you are my hope, O LORD;
my trust, O LORD, from my youth. R.

God, be not far from me;
my God, hasten to help me. R.

Second Reading

A woman adorned with the sun, standing on the moon.

A reading from the Book of Revelation 12, 1-6.10

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet,
and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.
Then another sign appeared in the sky;
it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns,
and on its heads were seven diadems.
Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky
and hurled them down to the earth.
Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth,
to devour her child when she gave birth.
She gave birth to a son, a male child,
destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.
Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
The woman herself fled into the desert
where she had a place prepared by God.
that there she might be taken care of
for twelve hundred and sixty days.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed One."

The word of the Lord.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Standing near the Cross of Jesus was his Mother
and Jesus said to the Disciple
"Here is your Mother".
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Here is your mother.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 19, 25-27

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
   and Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her,
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
   “Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary 19 (Ordinary Time I): Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord

Among the titles given to the Blessed Virgin in the Gospels that of "Mother of the Lord" has a special place. Elizabeth, the mother of Christ's herald, filled with the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 1, 41), used this title in greeting our Lady: "How does this happen to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?" (Luke 1, 43).

Under the title of "Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord," the formulary provided here, with the exception of the Prayer after Communion and the Preface, is the Mass found in the Roman Missal, Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ordinary Time, no. 3, the texts of which are marked by what is known as "Roman sobriety" and by deep devotion to the Mother of Jesus. The Preface is taken from the Proprium missarum Societatis Apostolatus Catholici, Curia Generalis Ordinis, Rome, 1976, p. 11.

In the Preface, God the Father is glorified on account of the double maternal role he has assigned in his "wisdom and love" to the Blessed Virgin: in relation to his Son ("In the Mother of your Son you showed the wonders of your power") and in relation to his people ("she fulfills a mother's role in the household of the Church").

----------

Entrance Antiphon cf. Judith 13, 18-19
Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, by the Lord God Most High,
above all women on the earth;
for he has so exalted your name
that your praise shall be undying on our lips.

COLLECT
As we venerate the glorious memory
of the most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of the Lord,
grant, we pray, O Lord, through her intercession,
that we, too, may merit to receive
from the fullness of your grace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading

Mary, whose womb bore the Lord, is hailed as the ark of the Lord.

A reading from the first Book of Chronicles 15, 3-4. 15-16; 16, 1-2

David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the LORD
to the place which he had prepared for it.
David also called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites.
The Levites bore the ark of God on their shoulders with poles,
as Moses had ordained according to the word of the LORD.

David commanded the chiefs of the Levites
to appoint their relatives as chanters,
to play on musical instruments, harps, lyres, and cymbals
to make a loud sound of rejoicing.

They brought in the ark of God and set it within the tent
which David had pitched for it.
Then they offered up holocausts and peace offerings to God.
When David had finished offering up the holocausts and peace offerings,
he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.
The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 131, 11, 13-14. 17-18 (R. 11b)

R. I will set on your throne a son, the fruit of your womb.

The LORD swore an oath to David,
a pledge never to be broken:
“Your own offspring
I will set upon your throne.” R.

Yes, the LORD has chosen Zion,
   desired it for a dwelling:
“This is my resting place forever;
here I will dwell, for I desire it.  R.

There I will make a horn sprout for David’s line;
I will set a lamp for my anointed.
His foes I will clothe with shame,
but on him my crown shall gleam.” R.

Alleluia

Virgin Mother of God,
he whom the whole world cannot contain
enclosed himself as a child within your womb.

Gospel

Blessed is the fruit of your womb.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 1, 39-47

Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
   to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
   and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
   would be fulfilled.”

And Mary said:
   “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God, my savior.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary 18 (Easter IV): The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Apostles

Many religious institutes and societies of apostolic life have as their patroness the Blessed Virgin Mary at prayer in the Cenacle and honour her liturgically under the title of "Queen of Apostles." Prominent among these are the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, founded by St. Vincent Pallotti (d. 1850), the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missionaries (P.I.M.E.) founded by Bishop Angelo Ramazzotti (d. 1861), the Pious Society if St. Paul for the Apostolate of the Press, and other institues owing their origin to Blessed Giacomo Alberione (d. 1971).

Many men and women in their apostolic and missionary zeal have noted the preeminent and "royal" position occupied by the Mother of Jesus in the community of the early Church and have recognised the importance of her presence at the events of Pentecost in relation to the spread of the Gospel message.

This Mass, except for the Preface, is taken from the Proprium missarum Societatis Apostolatus Catholici, Vatican Polygot Press, 1972, pp. 3-6.

This formulary has great missionary value. The assembly of the faithful prays that the Church may spread, "by word and example, the glory of [God's] name" (Collect), may "grow in number" (Prayer over the Offerings), and "may advance in the way of salvation" (Prayer after Communion).

The Preface celebrate God's "plan of salvation," in which the Blessed Virgin, guided by the Holy Spirit, hastened with the message of salvation to the house of Elizabeth, and "Peter and the other Apostles," strengthened by the descent of the Spirit, moved out boldly from the Cenacle to preach the Gospel of Christ to all nations.

----------

Entrance Antiphon cf. Acts 1, 14
The disciples devoted themselves with one accord to prayer with Mary,
the Mother of Jesus, alleluia.

COLLECT
O God, who gave the Holy Spirit to your Apostles
as they joined in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus,
grant through her intercession
we may faithfully serve your majesty
and extend, by word and example, the glory of your name.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading

With one heart the disciples continued in steadfast prayer with Mary, the mother of Jesus.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 1, 12-14; 2, 1-4

After Jesus had been taken up into heaven,
   the apostles returned to Jerusalem
from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem,
   a sabbath day’s journey away.

When the apostles entered the city
they went to the upper room where they were staying,
Peter and John and James and Andrew,
Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,
James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot,
   and Judas son of James.
All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer,
   together with some women,
and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
the apostles were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues,
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 86 (87), 1-2. 3 & 5. 6-7 (R.: 3)

R. Glorious things are told of you, O city of God.

The LORD loves the city
   founded on holy mountains,
loves the gates of Zion
more than any dwelling in Jacob. R.

Glorious things are said of you,
   O city of God!
But of Zion it must be said:
“They all were born here.”  R.

The Most High confirms this;
the LORD notes in the register of the peoples:
“This one was born right here.”
So all sing in their festive dance:
“Within you is my true home.” R.

Alleluia

There by the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ
stood holy Mary, mournful mother,

queen of heaven and earth.

Gospel

Woman, this is your son. This is your mother.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 8, 19-21

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
   and Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her,
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
   “Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

The Gospel of the Lord.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
By your favor, O Lord,
and through the intercession of Blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
may our offering obtain for your Church this grace,
that she may grow in the number of the faithful
and be ever radiant with an abundance of virtues.
Through Christ our Lord.

PREFACE

The Blessed Virgin as Queen of Apostles

The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.
R. We lift them up to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is right and just.

t is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
on this memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
the first to proclaim Christ,
even before the Apostles.

Guided by the Holy Spirit,
she hastened to bring her Son to John,
that he might be sanctified and filled with joy.
It was the same Spirit
who made Peter and the other Apostles
fearless in preaching the Gospel to all nations,
with its saving message of life in Christ.

In our own day the Blessed Virgin
inspires by her example new preachers of the Gospel,
cherishes them with a mother’s love,
and sustains them by her unceasing prayer,
so that they may bring the Good News of Christ the Savior
to all the world.

With all the Saints and Angels
we praise you for ever:

Holy, Holy, Holy....

Communion Antiphon cf. Lk 11, 27
Blessed is the womb that bore Christ the Lord;
blessed, rather, are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Having partaken, O Lord, of these helps to our salvation
on this memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Queen of Apostles,
we humbly beseech you, that,
persevering in your will
and in service of the human family,
your people may draw ever closer to salvation.
Through Christ our Lord.

"Salto de la Reja" through the Years

On the early morning of Monday after the Solemnity of Pentecost (declared in 2018 by Pope Francis as the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church) in the village of El Rocio, 55km from Sevilla, people from around Spain and over the world gather around the Santuario de El Rocio to witness the culmination of the Romeria, the Procession of the Image of the Virgen del Rocio.

One of the spectacular highlights of the Procession is the so-called "Salto de la Reja" (Spanish for Jumping to the Fence) where after hours of waiting for the arrival Simpecado of the Hermandad Matriz de Almonte, devotees tried their best to approach the Andas of the Image.

Origins of the Salto de la Reja
The origins of the current Salto are recent, since the form of procession of the Virgen del Rocío by the village it has changed over the years. In 1969 , with a new sanctuary inaugurated, the appearance of the Rocio changes and the procession of the Virgin goes ahead at 8 or 9 in the morning . In 1975, a pair of Almonteños left the fence spontaneously around 5 or 6 in the morning, this being the origin of the current rite, which over the years has become the high point of the Romeria del Rocio.

The Rite of the Procession
The rite begins at midnight of Monday when the Simpecado (badge representing the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary) of the Hermandad Matriz del Rocio, left the Santuario for Plaza de la Donana (adjacent the Santuario) to begin the recitation of the Rosary where the other Simpecados of the Hermandad Filiales awaits.

The Simpecados of every Hermandad Filial (Brotherhoods that are affiliate to the Hermandad Matriz), passes in front of the Santuario-Ermita, in order of antiquity, which is getting added more and more every year (as of this year has 124 Hermandad Filiales, with 1 coming from Belgium).  And once the Simpecado of the Brotherhood Matriz de Almonte arrives, it enters the Santuario, and as soon as they saw the Simpecado, the Almonteños jump the fence to carry the Virgin of the Rocio and to begin its glorious procession.

The Procession will do in reverse once the Virgen del Rocio goes out, this time the Image approaches the Chapel of the Filial Hermandades that is part of the itinerary of the Procession, while the ones that is not part of the itinerary, the Simpecado will approach the route the Virgen passes. They will then homage La Blanca Paloma with recitation of Prayers and Salves, and with throwing of Rose petals. The Procession then goes as usual until it goes back to her Santuario by Noon after being in the streets for an average 10-12 hours.

The Hours of the 'Salto de la Reja'
The times of the Salto varies from time to time, taking place in between 2.10am-35am. The record are taken from 1993 (the year St. John Paul II visited the Santuario weeks later) up to present (information may be added in the future) and the time format that will be used is in Madrid Time.

Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary 17 (Easter III): Our Lady of the Cenacle

Our Lady of the Cenacle is honoured in the liturgy of several dioceses and religious families, especially in the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Cenacle, founded by St. Therese Couderc (d. 1885).

The Church has come to see in our Lady, present at the first gathering of Christ's disciples (Entrance Antiphon cf. Acts 1, 14), a mother cherishing the infant Church in her love and the supreme example of prayer in oneness of heart.

In this Mass formulary the Church gives glory to the Father in heaven for his gift of the Holy Spirit. Our Lady is here presented as:

- the Virgin filled with the Holy Spirit: God has poured out on her in abundance "the gifts of the Holy Spirit" (Collect). The one "who was overshadowed by the Spirit at the Incarnation of the Word is once more filled with [this] Gift from on high at the birth of God's new people" (Preface);

- model for the Church: above all, she is the model of prayer, for God has given us a wonderful example of prayer in the Church at its beginning (cf. Preface), namely, the Mother of Jesus as she prays with the Apostles "in oneness of mind and heart" (Preface; cf. Entrance Antiphon, Acts 1, 14, cf. Collect). The one "who waited in prayer for the coming of Christ is still at prayer as she calls upon the promised Paraclete" (Preface). A model, too, of harmony, unity, and peace (cf. Preface, Prayer after Communion); of obedience to the voice of the Holy Spirit (cf. Prayer over the Offerings); of watchfulness in waiting for the Second Coming of Christ (cf. Preface); of faithful observance of the word of God (cf. Alleluia, Luke 2, 19) and eagerness to sow its seed.

----------

Entrance Antiphon cf. Acts 1, 14
The disciples devoted themselves with one accord to prayer with Mary,
the Mother of Jesus, alleluia.

COLLECT
Lord our God,
as the Blessed Virgin was at prayer with the Apostles
you poured out on her in abundance
the gifts of the Holy Spirit;
grant through her intercession
that we too, being filled with the same Spirit,
may persevere with one mind in prayer
and bring to the world around us
the Good News of salvation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading

You will receive the power of the Holy Spirit.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles  1, 6-14

After the resurrection of Jesus,
the apostles gathered around him and asked,
“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
Jesus answered them,
“It is not for you to know the times or seasons
that the Father has established by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
   throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.”
When Jesus had said this, as the apostles were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
While the apostles were looking intently at the sky as Jesus was going,
suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.
They said, “Men of Galilee,
why are you standing there looking at the sky?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”
Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem
from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem,
   a sabbath day’s journey away.

When the apostles entered the city
they went to the upper room where they were staying,
Peter and John and James and Andrew,
Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,
James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot,
   and Judas son of James.
All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer,
   together with some women,
and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 86 (87), 1-2. 3 y 5. 6-7 (R.: 3)

R. Glorious things are told of you, O city of God.

The LORD loves the city
   founded on holy mountains,
loves the gates of Zion
more than any dwelling in Jacob. R.

Glorious things are said of you,
   O city of God!
But of Zion it must be said:
“They all were born here.”  R.

The Most High confirms this;
the LORD notes in the register of the peoples:
“This one was born right here.”
So all sing in their festive dance:
“Within you is my true home.” R.

Alleluia cf. Lc 2, 19

Blessed is the Virgin Mary who kept the word of God
and pondered it in her heart.

Gospel

My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 8, 19-21

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to Jesus
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told,
“Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you.”
Jesus said to them in reply,
“My mother and my brothers are those
who hear the word of God and act on it.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
All-holy Father,
receive these gifts from joyful
hearts and grant that we may follow closely
the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary
by obeying the voice of the Spirit
and seeking to praise your glory in all things.
Through Christ our Lord.

PREFACE

The Blessed Virgin, at Prayer with the Apostles, Awaits the Coming of the Paraclete

The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.
R. We lift them up to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is right and just.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

How wonderful is the example you have given us
of harmony and prayer in the Church at its beginning:
you show us the Mother of Jesus
as she prays with the Apostles
in oneness of mind and heart.

She who waited in prayer for the coming of Christ
is still at prayer
as she calls upon the promised Paraclete;
she who was overshadowed by the Spirit
at the Incarnation of the Word
is once more filled with your Gift from on high
at the birth of God’s new people.

As she keeps vigil in prayer,
her heart on fire with love,
she is the model of the Church,
enriched by the gifts of the Spirit
and keeping watch for the Second Coming of Christ.

Through him the Angels of heaven
offer their prayer of adoration
as they rejoice in your presence for ever.
May our voices be one with theirs
in their triumphant hymn of praise:

Holy, Holy, Holy....

Communion Antiphon cf. Acts 2, 42
The disciples continued steadfast in the teaching of the Apostles,
in communion of spirit, in the breaking of bread,
and in the practice of prayer, alleluia.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Lord God,
you have fed your holy people
with the one Bread of life;
renew us by the one gift of the Holy Spirit
and grant that under the protection of the Blessed Virgin
we may work for the unity and peace of all those
for whom your Son offered himself
as the sacrifice of our redemption.
Through Christ our Lord.
