The Current Papal Master of Ceremonies

Everytime we watch a Papal Ceremony (Masses, Consistory, Vespers etc.), we all notice the man on the left of the Holy Father, some of us know him as Abp. Diego Giovanni Ravelli, and he is the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations. But we also notice the man on their right is different on every celebrations. So who are they?

They are the Papal Master of Ceremonies and him, together with the Master assist the Holy Father during the Liturgical Celebration, while the others (all or in part depending) are tasked to coordinate other aspects of the celebration such as the accompanying the concelebrants, deacons, acolytes among others.

During the time of the Sede Vacante, the Master of Ceremonies will be on duty during the congregations of Cardinals, and will be given specific tasks during the Conclave. They will be also appointed by the Master to be a personal master of the Cardinals, assisting him in taking possession of his Titular or Diaconate Church or when he celebrate a Ceremony in Rome, on behalf of the Holy Father.

Until 2007, on every Pastoral Visit to Roman Churches, visits to Italy and/or abroad, only the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations assist the Holy Father, while 1 or 2 Master of Ceremonies coordinates the Liturgical services organised by the host Diocese the Pope is visiting. And when the term of Msgr. Guido Marini started, he now includes the Master of Ceremonies to assist him but on the Pontificate of Pope Francis, the Master of Ceremonies disappeared only during Pastoral Visits to Roman Churches and visits to Italy but still have them during Apostolic Journeys.

So far there are 9 Master of Ceremonies, get to know about them and the Ceremonies they have assisted (starting from the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI). The order is based on their appointments as Master of Ceremonies.
