In this Mass, the Collect and Communion Antiphon are taken from The Roman Missal, Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for Easter Time, the texts of which are notable for their teaching and beauty.
The Mass celebrates the Lord's Resurrection and the joy that flows from it:
- to the whole world, joy given by God the Father "by the Resurrection of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ" (Collect); and so the day of the Lord's Resurrection was a "day of light and life when the night of death" was ended and "the whole world [was to] exult" (Preface).
- to the infant Church, which trembled "with joy at seeing again its immortal Lord" (Preface, cf. Luke 24, 41; John 20, 20).
- to the Virgin Mother, whose heart was filled "with joy beyond all telling" at the Resurrection of Christ (Preface).
The Church therefore greets the Virgin and invites her to rejoice: "Rejoice, O Virgin Mother, for Christ has risen from the tomb" (Communion Antiphon); "Rejoice, Mother of Light: Jesus, the sun of justice, overcoming the darkness of the tomb, sheds his radiance over the whole world" (Entrance Antiphon); "Hail, holy Mary, as you stood by the cross in sorrow, you bore the sufferings of your Son but now you are filled with serenity and joy." (Alleluia).
the Blessed Virgin, who conceived her Son in faith, and in faith looked forward to his Resurrection (cf. Preface), is the model of faith by which disciples acknowledge Christ, the child conceived by the Virgin Mary, to be truly God and truly human, and through the saving power of the Resurrection look forward to eternal happiness (cf. Prayer after Communion).
