Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary 37 (Ordinary Time XIX): The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Divine Hope

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Divine Hope
Beata Maria Virgo, Mater Sanctæ Spei

----------

Entrance Antiphon

Hail, Virgin Mary, hope of God’s people:
you come to the aid of all who have no hope,
you look with love on all who seek your help.

Salve, Virgo Maria, spes fidelium:
tu desperan tes adiuvas,
cunctos respicis ad te confugientes.

COLLECT
Lord our God, you give us the joy
of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary
as Mother of divine hope.
In your mercy
grant that, through her prayers and help,
we may always live as good citizens of this world,
with our hearts fixed on the world to come,
and so receive what we look forward to in faith,
the fulfillment of all our hope.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Deus, qui beatam Virginem Mariam
Matrem sanctæ spei nos venerari tribuis,
concede propitius, ut, eius precibus et auxilio,
spem ad cælestia semper dirigentes,
terrenæ civitatis munera seduli expleamus
et quæ speranda credimus, exspectata sumamus.
Per Dominum.

Or:

Lord God,
you have given the Blessed Virgin Mary to your Church
as a beacon of unfailing hope.
In your goodness
grant that those who are burdened by life’s cares
may find in her consolation and strength
and those who despair of salvation
may find their hearts warmed and uplifted
as they turn to her in their need.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Domine Deus, qui in Ecclesia tua
beatam Virginem signum certæ spei prælucere voluisti,
concede propitius,
ut, qui tædio vitæ afficiuntur,
ad eam confugientes, solacio reficiantur,
et erigant corda qui languent desperatione salutis.
Per Dominum.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading
Sir 24, 9-12. 18-21

I am the mother of divine hope.

A reading from the Book of Sirach

Before all ages, in the beginning, God created me,
and through all ages I shall not cease to be.
In the holy tent I ministered before him,
and in Zion I fixed my abode.
Thus in the chosen city God has given me rest,
   in Jerusalem is my domain.
I have struck root among the glorious people,
in the portion of the Lord, his heritage.

Come to me, all you that yearn for me,
and be filled with my fruits.
You will remember me as sweeter than honey,
better to have than the honeycomb.
Whoever eats of me will hunger still,
   whoever drinks of me will thirst for more;
whoever obeys me will not be put to shame,
whoever serves me will never fail.

The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm
Lk 1, 46-48a. 48b-49. 50-51. 52-53. 54-55

R. Hail, Virgin Mary, hope of God’s people.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness. R.

Behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name. R.

The Lord’s mercy is from age to age
   to those who fear him.
He has shown might with his arm,
dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. R.

He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
   but lifted up the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty. R.

The Lord has helped Israel his servant,
   remembering his mercy,
according to his promise to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants for ever. R.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Mother and Virgin and Queen of the world,
pray for your children to God who chose you.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel
Jn 2, 1-11

The mother of Jesus was at the wedding feast with him.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

There was a wedding in Cana in Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
When the wine ran short,
the mother of Jesus said to him,
   “They have no wine.”
And Jesus said to her,
“Woman, how does your concern affect me?
My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servers,
   “Do whatever he tells you.”
Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,
each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus told the servers,
   “Fill the jars with water.”
So they filled them to the brim.
Then Jesus told them,
“Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”
So they took it.
And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,
without knowing where it came from
(although the servers who had drawn the water knew),
the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
   “Everyone serves good wine first,
   and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;
but you have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee
   and so revealed his glory,
and his disciples began to believe in him.

The Gospel of the Lord.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
Receive, O Lord, we ask, the prayers of your people
with the sacrificial offerings,
that, through the intercession of Blessed Mary,
the Mother of your Son,
no petition may go unanswered,
no request be made in vain.
Through Christ our Lord.

Suscipe, quæsumus, Domine,
preces populi tui cum oblationibus hostiarum,
ut, intercedente beata Maria, Filii tui Genetrice,
nullius sit irritum votum,
nullius sit vacua postulatio.
Per Christum.

PREFACE

Mary Is an Example of Hope in God
(Sancta Maria supernæ spei exemplar)

The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.
R. We lift them up to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is right and just.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
to give you thanks with all our hearts, Lord, holy Father,
for your gift to our human family
of Jesus Christ, the author of our salvation,
and of Mary, his Mother, the model of divine hope.

Your lowly handmaid
placed all her trust in you:
she awaited in hope
and conceived in faith the Son of Man,
whom the prophets had foretold.

With untiring love
she gave herself to his service
and became the Mother of all the living.

Mary, the fairest fruit of Christ’s redeeming love,
is a sister to all the children of Adam
as they journey toward the fullness of freedom
and raise their eyes to her,
the sign of sure hope and comfort,
until the day of the Lord dawns in glory.

In our joy we sing
with all the choirs of Angels:

Vere dignum et iustum est, æquum et salutare,
te, Domine, sancte Pater, summis laudibus celebrare,
qui lesum Christum humano generi
Auctorem salutis providisti
eique supernæ spei exemplar dedisti Mariam.

Humilis namque Ancilla tua
totam spem in te, Domine, collocavit:
Filium hominis, quem prophetæ nuntiaverant,
spe sustinuit ac fide concepit,
eiusque operi strenua caritate inserviens
mater facta est cunctorum viventium;
sed et ipsa, redemptionis fructus præcelsus,
soror est omnium filiorum Adæ,
qui ad plenam gradientes libertatem,
suspiciunt Mariam, signum certæ spei et solacii,
donec dies Domini gloriosus lucescat.

Et ideo, choris angelicis sociati,
te laudamus in gaudio confitentes:

Holy, Holy, Holy....

Communion Antiphon
Luke 1, 45

Blessed are you who have believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord will be fulfilled.

Beata es, quæ credidisti,
quoniam perficientur ea
quæ dicta sunt tibi a Domino.

Or:
Titus 2, 12-13

Let us live justly and devoutly in this age,
as we await blessed hope
and the coming of the glory of our great God
and of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Iuste et pie vivamus in hoe sæculo,
exspectantes beatam spem
et adventum gloriæ magni Dei
et salvatoris nostri Iesu Christi.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Having received the Sacrament of salvation and faith,
we humbly beseech you, O Lord,
that we, who honor the Blessed Virgin, Mother of our hope,
may be worthy to share with her in the charity of heaven.
Through Christ our Lord.

Sumptis, Domine, salutis et fidei sacramentis,
supplices te deprecamur,
ut, beatam Virginem, spei matrem, devote recolentes,
supernæ caritatis cum ipsa participes fieri mereamur.
Per Christum.
