CELEBRATION

Initial Monition

Brothers and sisters
of the beloved Church that lives in Rome,
faithful from every part of the world,
pilgrims to the tomb of the Apostle Peter:
together we open, in the name of the Father,
a new liturgical year.
Together we begin
the second year of preparation for the Great Jubilee,
invoking the Holy Spirit who will lead us
to understanding his presence and action
in personal life, in the Church and in history.
During this celebration we deliver
the glorious Cross
to the missionaries of the city mission:
together we invoke the Crucified Christ, Savior and Liberator.

Penitential Act

After a short pause of silence, the singer proclaims the invocations:

Lord, sprout of justice, who gives your Spirit to transfigure humanity and the earth.

Il cantore e L'assemblea:
Signore, pieta. Signore, pieta.

Christ, Son of man, who in your Spirit leads all creation to salvation.

Il cantore e L'assemblea:
Cristo, pieta. Cristo, pieta.

Lord, our liberation, who are invoked by the Spirit and the Church for your Kingdom to come.

Il cantore e L'assemblea:
Signore, pieta. Signore, pieta.

Invocation to the Holy Spirit

Holy Father:
Brothers and sisters
in vigilance and prayer,
awaiting the glorious coming of the Lord Jesus,
let us be guided by the Holy Spirit:
it is he who leads us to the whole truth.
The Church invokes him
throughout the second year of preparation for the Jubilee,
imploring his consolation and the coming of the Kingdom.

The schola and the assembly repeats:
℟.Come, come, Spirit of love,
to teach the things of God,
come, come, Spirit of peace,
to suggest the things he has said to us.

PRAYER OF THE HOLY FATHER
FOR THE SECOND YEAR OF PREPARATION
FOR THE GREAT JUBILEE 2000

The Holy Father:
Holy Spirit, most welcome guest of our hearts,
reveal to us the profound meaning of the Great Jubilee
and prepare our hearts to celebrate it with faith,
in the hope which does not disappoint,
in the love which seeks nothing in return.

Spirit of truth, you who search the depths of God,
memory and prophecy in the Church,
lead mankind to recognize in Jesus of Nazareth
the Lord of glory, the Saviour of the world,
the supreme fulfilment of history. ℟.

The Holy Father:
Creator Spirit, hidden builder of the Kingdom,
by the power of your holy gifts guide the Church
to cross with courage the threshold of the new millennium
and to carry to the coming generations
the light of the Word who brings salvation.

Spirit of holiness, divine breath which moves the universe,
come and renew the face of the earth.
Awaken in Christians a desire for full unity,
that they may be for the world an effective sign and istrument
of intimate union with God and of the unity of the whole human race. ℟.

The Holy Father:
Spirit of communion, soul and stregth of the Church,
grant that wealth of charisms and ministries
may contribute to the unity of the Body of Christ;
grant that laity, consacrated persons and ordained ministers
may work together in harmony to build the one Kingdom of God.

Spirit of consolation, unfailing source of joy and peace,
inspire solidarity with the poor,
grant the sick the strength they need,
pour our trust and hope upon those experiencing trials,
awaken in all hearts a commitment to a better future. ℟.

The Holy Father:
Spirit of wisdom, inspiration of minds and hearts,
direct science and technology
to the service of life, justice and peace.
Render fruitful our dialogue with the followers of other religions,
lead the different cultures to appreciate the values of the Gospel.

Spirit of life, by whose power the Word was made flesh
in the womb of the Virgin Mary, the woman of attentive silence,
make us docile to the promptings of your love
and ever ready to accept the signs of the times
which you place along the paths of history ℟.

The Holy Father:
To you, Spirit of love,
with the Almighty Father and the Only-Begotten Son,
be praise, honour and glory
for ever and ever
℟. Amen. Amen. Amen.

CONCLUDING RITE

Delivery of the Cross of the City Mission of Rome

Holy Father:
Brothers and sisters,
at the beginning of the City Mission
I delivered and entrusted to you the quadriform Gospel,
light for the path of evangelization.
While the Mission itself
is about to bring the happy announcement
to the entire homes of this beloved city of Rome,
I deliver and entrust to you the Cross of Christ,
the power of God and the wisdom of God.

May the Cross advance in our parish assemblies,
orient them, guide them and console them;
May everyone's eyes turn to her,
the new tree that gives life.

May the Cross be welcomed by all missionaries,
may it be indicated to seekers of the truth,
may it be shown to all families,
to those who are closed in the pain and mourning of death,
to those who open up to life with trust and hope.

And you, missionary brothers and sisters,
do not be afraid to lean on it:
from the glorious Cross Christ the Lord pours out
the rivers of living water of his Spirit to renew
the face of the earth.

The Holy Father delivers the Cross of the City Mission of Rome to some missionaries representing the five sectors of the Dioceses.

Meanwhile we sing:

TU SARAI PROFETA

Blessing

Holy Father:
The Lord be with you.
℟. And with your Spirit.

The Deacon:
Bow down for the blessing.

Holy Father:
Renew your faithful, Lord,
so that transformed by the action of your Spirit
they find no other pride than in the Crucified Christ
and in him they place all their hope
to reach the glory of the Kingdom.
Through Christ our Lord
℟. Amen.

And may the blessing of almighty God,
the Father, and the Son, +, and the Holy Spirit,
come down on you and remain with you for ever.
℟. Amen.

The Deacon:
May the Holy Spirit make you experience
the power of the Cross of Christ.
Go in peace.
℟. Thanks be to God
