The 39th Intramuros Grand Marian Procession Order of Procession


Last Sunday, the Intramuros Grand Marian Procession took place, organized by the the Cofradia de la Inmaculada Concepcion, now on its 39th year. This year may be considered as the largest number of images scheduled to participate in recent history of the IGMP with 116, however, only 90 Images were present thus being the final count, which was lower than last year’s procession with 96. The format for the line-up returned to its original format that is the life of Mary, followed by Privately owned Marian Images, images taken from the Litany of the BVM, Veneradas that are Parish & Shrine based and lastly the Coronadas.

The Assembly and Formation Areas for the Images were also returned at Plaza Mexico, after last year's formation area at the Postigo vacant lot proved to be "uncomfortable".

For this year, the recently Canonically Crowned image of NS del Pilar de Morong graced the streets of Intramuros for the 1st time, so is the recently Episcopally Crowned Maria Auxiliadora de Marinduque, representing the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians in Paranaque this year, after the Maria Auxiliadora de Marawi that was given to the people of Lanao del Norte last May. Another reason the Image participated this year is because the Bishop who declared that the chapel would be elevated to the Parish Church and have the said invocation as Patroness, Bishop Alfredo Obviar, was recently declared Venerable by His Holiness, Pope Francis.

This also marks the return of the Bambina Maria, Apo Caridad de Bantay after missing last year, Mahal na Birhen ng Biglang Awa de Boac after 25 years, and the long-awaited return of the Virgen de la Merced de Candaba after 4 years on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Mercedarian order.

If there’s returns, there’s absents. With 26, this is also the greatest number of absents in recent memory of the IGMP. Some Images were invited but haven't been participating in years, while others that were present last year withdrew this year.
