SECOND STATION
IN THE VATICAN BASILICA
Funeral Mass
92. The Funeral Mass, at which the burial of the Roman Pontiff takes place, is celebrated on the day established by the College of Cardinals. The Mass is preceded by the placing of the body of the deceased Pontiff in the coffin; after the Mass, the transfer to the tomb and the burial take place.

93. At a suitable hour before the Funeral Mass, the body of the deceased Pontiff is placed in a coffin of cypress wood. At the appropriate time, the coffin is closed in the presence of the Cardinal Camerlengo, the Cardinal Heads of Order, the Cardinal Archpriest of the Vatican Basilica, the Cardinal formerly Secretary of State, the Cardinal Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, the Substitute of the Secretariat of State, the Prefect of the Papal Household, the Almoner of the Supreme Pontiff, the Vice-Camerlengo, a representation of the Canons of the Basilica of Saint Peter, and the Secretary of the Supreme Pontiff, vested in choir dress, and the relatives of the deceased.
The Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations may also grant permission for others to be present at this rite.
94. It belongs to the Master to prepare, in a suitable place, all that is required: the Ritual, holy water, a white silk veil with which the face of the Supreme Pontiff is to be covered, and a bag containing coins minted during his Pontificate.
It likewise belongs to the Master to draw up the Rogito in two copies, one of which is to be placed in a metal tube, the other preserved in the appropriate archive.
95. The Cardinal Camerlengo introduces the rite of the closing of the coffin with these words:

Dear brothers and sisters,
we are gathered here
to carry out certain acts of human reverence
before the Funeral Mass
of the Roman Pontiff, N.
Having placed his mortal body within the coffin,
we shall read the Rogito,
which recalls the life and the most important works
of the deceased Pontiff,
for which we give thanks to God.
We shall cover his face with respect and veneration,
in the firm hope
that he may behold the face of the Father,
together with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the Saints.
96. The Master of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff reads the Deed, copies of which will be signed by those present.
97. Meanwhile, the antiphon is sung:
itivit* anima mea ad Deum vivum: quando veniam, et apparebo ante faciem Domini?
My soul is thirsting for God, the God of my life; when can I enter and see the face of God?
And, if appropriate, an appropriate psalm is sung.
98. The Cardinal Camerlengo invites those present to prayer, saying:

Then the Cardinal Camerlengo continues:

Almighty and eternal God,
Lord of life and death,
we hope and believe
that the life of the Holy Father N.
is now hidden in you.
May his face,
for which the light of this world has failed,
be for ever illumined by the true light

to make them known to the Church,
now behold your fatherly face.

99. The Master of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff and the Secretary of the Supreme Pontiff draw a white silk veil over the face of the deceased. Then the Cardinal Camerlengo sprinkles the body with holy water.
100. The Master places in the coffin the purse containing the coins minted during the Pontificate of the deceased Pontiff and the tube containing the Deed, after having sealed it with the seal of the Office of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff.
101. While the coffin is being closed, Psalm 41 (42) is said.

Celebration of the Mass
102. On the day and at the time established by the Congregation of Cardinals, the Funeral Mass is celebrated by the Cardinals and Patriarchs of the Eastern Churches. The Cardinal Dean of the College of Cardinals presides over the concelebration or, if he is absent or legitimately impeded, the Sub-Dean or the Cardinal senior in order and age (cf. Universi Dominici Gregis, nos. 9 and 13). Red vestments are worn.

117. After the supplication of the Eastern Churches, all pray for some time in silence.
Then the Cardinal Dean sprinkles the body of the deceased Roman Pontiff with holy water and incenses it while the choir sings the responsory:
Credo quod Redémptor meus vivit
et in novíssimo die de terra surrectúrus sum;
I know that my Redeemer lives:
on the last day I shall rise again.
