The Roman Pontiff comes to venerate the Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary "Salus Populi Romani" in the Liberian Basilica of the Esquiline.

AVE, MARIS STELLA

The Roman Pontiff, having arrived at the Borghese Chapel, greets the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Rallegrati, piena di grazia:

il Signore è con te. (Lk 1, 28)

Rejoice, full of grace:
the Lord is with you.

The assembly:

Benedetta tu fra le donne

e benedetto il frutto del tuo grembo! (Lk 1, 42)

Blessed are you among women

and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

Holy Father:

Salve, Regina della misericordia,

Madre gloriosa di Dio.

Hail, Queen of Mercy,

Glorious Mother of God.

The assembly:

Tu, Salvezza del popolo romano, salve!

You, Salvation of the Roman people, hail!

Canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Lk 1, 46-55

Holy Father:

Tutta pura, tutta veneranda,

tu la migliore offerta

che l’umanità possa presentare a Dio,

Vergine madre, Madre sempre vergine,

supplice materna al Figlio tuo!

Conduci tu la barca della Chiesa

verso un porto di pace,

evitando i pericoli

e vincendo i marosi.

Custodisci questa tua città,

conforta chi vi arriva,

senza tetto né difesa

ed estendi a tutto il mondo

il tuo sostegno.

Con fede professiamo,

che tu sola sei la Genitrice di Dio,

con amore sempre più ti onoriamo,

con speranza ti preghiamo

e ti proclamiamo beata!

Dolce Signora,

mio conforto da Dio,

forza nella mia debolezza

accogli le preghiere che ti offro.

Tu per tutti fonte di letizia,

fa’ che io sia degno

di esultare di gioia insieme a te.

Guarda alla moltitudine di credenti,

o Madre del Salvatore,

allontanali da sventura e afflizione,

liberali dal male e dal maligno,

circondali con l’abbondanza

della tua benevolenza.

E quando tornerà il tuo Figlio, nostro Dio,

difendi con la tua intercessione materna

la nostra umana fragilità

e con la tua dolce mano

accompagnaci sino alla vita eterna,

Tu che sei Potente, perché Madre!

All pure, all venerable, 

you are the finest offering 

that humanity can present to God, 

Virgin Mother, ever virgin Mother, 

maternal suppliant to your Son!

Lead the boat of the Church 

to a port of peace, 

avoiding dangers 

and conquering the waves.

Guard this city of yours, 

comfort those who arrive there, 

without shelter or defense and 

extend your support 

to the whole world.

With faith we profess 

that you alone are the Mother of God, 

with ever gorwing love we honor you ever more, 

with hope we pray to you 

and proclaim you blessed!

Sweet Lady, 

my comfort from God, 

strength in my weakness, 

accept the prayers I offer you.

You source of joy for all, 

make me worthy 

of exulting with joy together with you.

Look upon the multitude of believers, 

O Mother of the Savior, 

keep them away from misfortune and affliction, 

free them from evil and the evil one, 

surround them with the abundance 

of your benevolence.

And at the glorious return of your Son, our God, 

defend our human frailty 

with your maternal intercession 

and, with your loving hand, 

accompany us to eternal life, 

you who are powerful as a Mother!

Padre nostro che sei nei cieli,

sia santificato il tuo nome,

venga il tuo regno,

sia fatta la tua volontà,

come in cielo così in terra.

Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano,

e rimetti a noi i nostri debiti

come anche noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori,

e non abbandonarci alla tentazione,

ma liberaci dal male.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Prayer

Holy Father:

O Dio, che ci dai la gioia di venerare

la madre del tuo diletto Figlio,

salvezza del popolo romano,

per la potenza delle sue preghiere

donaci l’abbondanza delle tue grazie

e guidaci al porto della misericordia e della pace.

the Mother of your beloved Son, 

salvation of the Roman people,
