CAPPELLA PAPALE
EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION
FOR THE BEGINNING
OF THE PETRINE MINISTRY
OF THE BISHOP OF ROME
LEO XIV
LEO XIV
St. Peter's Square
18 May 2025
__________
INTRODUCTORY NOTE
The euchological and biblical texts of the Holy Mass correspond to the propers from the Ordo Rituum pro Ministerii Petrini Initio Romae Episcopi on the Mass of the Inauguration of the Pontiff. The Eucharistic Prayer is I, with the Preface for the Solemnity of the Chair of Saint Peter in the Vatican being used.
The format of the rite is similar to the Inauguration Mass of the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI.
Some significant texts are reported here: the Laudes Regiæ, the rites of the sprinkling of holy water during Easter, the imposition of the pallium, the bestowal of the Fisherman's Ring and the text for the Mass.
__________
TU ES PETRUS
La schola (Mt 16, 18-19):
Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram
ædificabo Ecclesiam meam,
et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam,
et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum.
Simon Peter said to other disciples,
Jesus said to disciples and Simon,
Quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in cælis:
et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in cælis.
Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum.
You are Peter, and on this rock
I will build my Church,
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
And whatever you bind earth shall be bound in heaven,
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
The new Roman Pontiff descends, with the Patriarchs of the Eastern Churches, to the Sepulchre of St. Peter and pauses there in prayer. He then infuses incense into the thurible and incenses the Apostolic "Trophaeum".
In the meantime, the deacons take the Pastoral Pallium, the Fisherman's Ring and the Book of the Gospels and carry them together in procession.
The Holy Father ascends to the Basilica and joins the procession.

Ordo ad faciendam et aspergendam
aquam benedictam
Holy Father:
Fratelli e sorelle,
Brothers and sisters,
on this day made by the Lord,
we renew the memory of our Baptism
through the sign of this water which will be sprinkled on us.
May he help us by his grace
to remain faithful to the Spirit
we have received.
Everyone prays for a moment in silence.
The Holy Father:
Domine Deus omnipotens,
precibus populi tui adesto propitius;
et nobis, mirabile nostræ creationis opus,
sed et redemptionis nostræ mirabilius, memorantibus,
hanc aquam ✠ benedicere tu dignare.
Ipsam enim tu fecisti,
ut et arva fecunditate donaret,
et levamen corporibus nostris munditiamque præberet.
Aquam etiam tuæ ministram misericordiæ condidisti;
nam per ipsam solvisti tui populi servitutem,
illiusque sitim in deserto sedasti;
per ipsam novum fœdus nuntiaverunt prophetæ,
quod eras cum hominibus initurus;
in regenerationis lavacro renovasti.
Lord our God,
in your mercy be present to your people's prayers,
and, for us who recall the wondrous work of our creation
and the still greater work of our redemption,
graciously bless this water.
For you created water to make the fields fruitful
and to refresh and cleanse our bodies.
You also made water the instrument of your mercy:
for through water you freed your people from slavery
and quenched their thirst in the desert;
through water the Prophets proclaimed the covenant
you were to enter upon with the human race,
and last of all,
through water, which Christ made holy in the Jordan,
you have renewed our corrupted nature
in the bath of regeneration.
Therefore, may this water be for us
a memorial of the Baptism we have received,
and grant that we may share
in the gladness of our brothers and sisters
who at Easter have received their Baptiam.
Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.
The Holy Father sprinkles the assembly.
VIDI AQUAM
The schola and the assembly (cf. Ez 47, 1-2. 9):
Vidi aquam egredientem de templo,
a latere dextro, alleluia;
et omnes, ad quos pervenit aqua ista,
salvi facti sunt et dicent:
Alleluia, alleluia.
I saw water flowing from the Temple,
from its right-hand side, alleluia:
and all to whom this water came
were saved and shall say:
alleluia, alleluia.
The Holy Father:
May almighty God cleanse of our sins,
and through the celebration of this Eucharist
make us worthy to share at the Kingdom
R. Amen.
Gloria
(De angelis)
The Holy Father:
Glória in excélsis Deo
Glory to God in the highest,
Collecta
The Holy Father:
Oremus.
Deus, qui providentiæ tuæ consilio
super beatum Petrum, ceteris Apostolis præpositum,
Ecclesiam tuam ædificari voluisti,
respice propitius ad me famulum tuum,
et concede, ut, quem Petri constituisti successorem,
populo tuo visibile faciam unitatis fidei
et communionis principium et fundamentum.
Per Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum Filium tuum,
qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus,
per omnia sæcula sæculorum.
Let us pray.
O God, who in your providential design
willed that your Church be built
upon blessed Peter, whom you set over the other Apostles,
look with favour on me, your servant,
whom you have chosen as the successor of Peter.
Grant that I may always be for your people the visible source and foundation
of its unity in faith and communion.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
R. Amen.

Gloria tibi, Domine.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Cum [manifestasset se Iesus discipulis suis et] prandissent cum eis, dicit Simoni Petro Iesus: «Simon Ioannis, diligis me plus his?». Dicit ei: «Etiam, Domine, tu scis quia amo te». Dicit ei: «Pasce agnos meos».
Dicit ei iterum secundo: «Simon Ioannis, diligis me?». Ait illi: «Etiam, Domine, tu scis quia amo te». Dicit ei: «Pasce oves meas».
Dicit ei tertio: «Simon Ioannis, amas me?».

Praise to you, O Lord, praise to you.
PALLII PETRI IMPOSITIO
ET ANULI PISCATORIS TRADITIO
Cardinal from the order of Deacons:
Deus pacis, qui eduxit de mortuis
pastorem magnum ovium
Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum,
Ipse tibi Pallium donet
quod ab apostoli Petri Confessione sumpsimus.
Illi Pastor bonus
suos agnos suasque oves pascere præcepit;
tu hodie Petro succedis in Episcopatu huius Ecclesiæ
quam ille, cum apostolo Paulo, fidei genuit.
Spiritus veritatis, qui ex Patre procedit,
uberem inspirationem et eloquium
tuo ministerio fratres
in fidei unitate confirmandi largiatur.
May the God of peace, who brought back from the dead
our Lord Jesus Christ,
the great shepherd of the sheep,
bestow upon you the Pallium
taken from the Tomb of the Apostle Peter.
The Good Shepherd
charged Peter to feed his lambs and his sheep;
today you succeed him as the Bishop of this Church
to which he and the Apostle Paul were fathers in faith.
May the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father,
grant you his abundant gifts of wisdom and eloquence
in the ministry of confirming your brethren
in the unity of faith.
Then the Cardinal ascends to the seat and places the Pallium on the shoulders of the Roman Pontiff.
The schola and the assembly (Ps 67, 29):
Manda, Deus, virtuti tuæ;
Command your might, O God;
your might, O God, which you have shown for us.
Cardinal from the order of Priests:
Oremus.
Deus, qui adesse non dedignaris
ubi recto corde devotaque mente invocaris
supplicationibus Ecclesiæ tuæ quæsumus adesto:
super famulum tuum et Papam nostrum Leonem,
quem officio servitutis nostræ
in culmine apostolico constituisti
dexteræ tuæ
Benedictionem effunde
et ipse roboretur Dono Spiritus tui Sancti
ut tantum ministerium ita digne ferat
sicut tantæ dignitatis charismate augetur.
Per Christum Dominum nostrum.
Let us pray:
O God, who do not disappoint
those who call upon you with upright and devout hearts,
hear the fervent prayer of your Church
and pour forth your blessing
upon your servant Leo, our Pope,
to whom, through our humble service,
you have granted primacy in the apostolic office.
May he be strengthened by the gift of your Holy Spirit
and worthily exercise his high ministry
in accordance with the eminent charism he has received.
Through Christ our Lord.
The assembly:
Amen, amen, amen.
Cardinal from the order of Bishops:
Beatissime Pater,
Episcopus et Pastor animarum nostrarum
Christus, Filius Dei vivi,
qui super petram
Ecclesiam suam ædificavit,
Ipse tibi donet Anulum sigillum Petri Piscatoris,
qui suam spem in mari Galilææ expertus est,
cui Dominus Iesus cælorum Regni claves commisit.
Beato apostolo Petro tu hodie succedis
in Episcopatu huius Ecclesiæ,
quæ caritatis unitati præsidet,
ut beatus apostolus Paulus docuit;
Spiritus caritatis,
in corda nostra effusus,
vim et suavitatem largiatur
tuo ministerio omnes in Christum credentes
in unitatis communione servandi.
Most Holy Father,
may Christ, the Son of the living God,
the shepherd and guardian of our souls,
who built his Church upon rock,
grant you the ring, the seal of Peter the Fisherman,
who put his hope in him on the sea of Galilee,
and to whom the Lord Jesus entrusted the keys of the Kingdom of heaven.
Today you succeed the Blessed Apostle Peter
as the Bishop of this Church
which presides over the unity of charity,
as the Blessed Apostle Paul has taught.
May the Spirit of charity,
poured into our hearts,
grant you the gentleness and strength to preserve,
through your ministry, all those who believe in Christ
in unity and fellowship.
The cardinal presents the Fisherman's Ring to the Roman Pontiff.
The schola and the assembly (Ps 67, 29):
Manda, Deus, virtuti tuæ;
Command your might, O God;
your might, O God, which you have shown for us.
The Holy Father silently blesses with the Book of the Gospels.
Afterward, the schola acclaims:
Εἰς πολλὰ ἒτη, Δέσποτα.
Many years to you, Lord.
Some representatives of the people of God pay “obedience” to the Roman Pontiff.
TU ES PETRUS
La schola (Mt 16, 18-19):
Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram
ædificabo Ecclesiam meam,
et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam,
et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum.

R. Dignum et iustum est.
It is right and just.
Et te in sanctis tuis laudare mirabilem,
per quos potissimum Unigeniti tui sacrum corpus exornas
et Ecclesiæ tuæ fundamenta constituis.
Ipsam enim sapienter in patriarchis et prophetis
antiquo fœdere præparatam,
novissimis temporibus in apostolis præcipue condidisti.
custodemque fecisti,
ut fratres quoque suos valeret iugiter confirmare,
et a Filio tuo regni clavibus insignitus
quidquid ipse statuisset in terris,
servaturum te, Pater, sciret in cælis.
Cum hodie singulare munus
Principi Apostolorum, tua gratia, commissum,
devota mente recolimus, maiestatem tuam collaudamus,
et choris angelicis sociamur in exsultatione clamantes:
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
and to praise you, glorious in the company of your saints.
Through them, you adorn the mystical body of your only-begotten Son,
and make them the foundation of your holy Church,
prepared in the patriarchs and prophets
of the old covenant
and established, in the fullness of time, upon the apostles.
From their number you chose blessed Peter,
who, after confessing the divinity of Christ,
became the rock on which his Church
was to be built.
You made him the guide
and guardian of your whole flock,
that he might constantly confirm his brethren in faith
and, entrusted by your Son with the keys of the kingdom,
might know that whatever he laid down on earth,
you, Father, would confirm in heaven.
Today, as we recall with devotion and gratitude
this great task and responsibility bestowed by your grace upon the Prince of the Apostles,
we praise your majesty
and join the choirs of angels as we joyfully acclaim:
Sanctus
(De angelis)

Cantus ad communionem
TU ES CHRISTUS
The schola and the assembly (Mt 16, 16b):
R/. Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi, alleluia.
You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, alleluia.
La schola (Sal 22):
1. Dominus pascit me, et nihil mihi deerit:
in pascuis virentibus me collocavit,
super aquas quietis eduxit me,
animam meam refecit.
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit.
ipsa me consolata sunt.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and staff;
with these you give me comfort.
3. Parasti in conspectu meo mensam
adversus eos, qui tribulant me;
impinguasti in oleo caput meum,
et calix meus redundat.
You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing.
4. Etenim benignitas et misericordia subsequentur me
omnibus diebus vitæ meæ,
et inhabitabo in domo Domini
in longitudinem dierum.
Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord's own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever.
AVE, VERUM CORPUS
The assembly:
Ave, verum Corpus, natum
de Maria Virgine:
vere passum, immolatum
in cruce pro homine.
Cuius latus perforatum
fluxit aqua et sanguine;
esto nobis prægustatum
mortis in examine.
O Iesu dulcis!
O Iesu pie!
O Iesu, fili Mariæ!
Hail, true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary,
who truly suffered,
sacrificed on the Cross for mankind,
whose pierced side
flowed with water and blood:
be for us a foretaste [of heaven]
in the trial of death.
O merciful,
O kind,
O sweet Jesus, Son of Mary.
Silence for personal prayer.
Post Communionem
The Holy Father:
Oremus.
Mensæ cælestis participes effecti,
supplices te, Domine, deprecamur,
ut, huius virtute mysterii
Ecclesiam tuam in unitate et caritate confirmes,
et me famulum tuum cui pastorale munus tradidisti
Let us pray.
Made sharers in the heavenly banquet,
we humbly entreat you, Lord,
by the power of this mystery:
strengthen your Church in unity and charity,
and grant that I, your servant, whom you have entrusted with the Petrine ministry,
may always, together with the flock entrusted to my care,
experience your saving help and protection.
Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.
