As early as the second century, especially in the writings of St. Justin (d. c.163) and St. Irinaeus (d. c.200), the Blessed Virgin Mary is seen by the Church as the new Eve or the new woman, intimately associated with Christ, the new Adam (cf. 1 Corinthians 15, 45), in the work of salvation. By her faith and obedience she undoes the loss inflicted on the human race by the unbelief and disobedience of the first Eve: "The knot of Eve's disobedience was loosed by Mary's obedience. The bonds fastened by the virgin Eve through disbelief were untied by the Virgin Mary through faith" (St. Irinaeus, Adversus haereses 3: 22, 4: Sch, no.34, p.82).
In this formulary the saving "mystery of the woman" -of Mary and the Church- is commemorated. Mary, as "type of the Church" (cf. Lumen Gentium, no.63), is the woman promised in the Proto-Gospel (cf. Genesis 3, 15), greeted by Elizabeth as blessed among all women (cf. Luke 1, 42), from whom the Son of God became truly human (cf. Galatians 4, 4), anticipating the mysterious "hour" of Jesus at the wedding feast at Cana (cf. John 2, 4), fulfilling her role of mother at the foot of the Cross (cf. John 19, 26), resplendent in heaven as the woman clothed with the sun and crowned with stars (c. Revelation 12, 1).
Mary is thus celebrated as:
- the firstfruits of the new creation: "you chose the blessed Virgin, formed by the Holy Spiit, as the firstfruits of the new creation" (Collect; cf. Lumen Gentium, no. 56).
- the new earth, where, from the moment of her Immaculate Conception, "justice dwells" (cf. Responsorial Psalm).
- the firstfruits of the new people of God: "you made her the firstfruits of your new people" (Preface).
- a disciple of the New Law: "the first disciple of the New Law" (Preface).
- a woman given a new heart by God, in accordance with the prophecy of Ezekiel (cf. 1, 9): "you formed a new heart for the second Eve" (Prayer after Communion).
- a woman preparing the new wine for the Church: "Blessed are you, Virgin Mary... through you Christ has prepared the new wine for the Church." (Communion Antiphon, B).
- a faithful virgin: "we celebrate the memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary and her complete self-giving to the sacrifice of the New Law" (Prayer over the Offerings).
- the new Jerusalem, the holy city, the dwelling-place of God (cf. 1st Reading, Revelation 21, 1-5a).
To sum up: Holy Mary, "Conceived without stain, enriched by gifts of grace... is indeed the new woman" (Preface), Mother and companion of Christ, author of the New Covenant (cf. Preface).
