The entrance into the Conclave

INFORMATIVE NOTE
6. The second chapter illustrates the Rite of entry into the Conclave and the oath. To enter the Conclave, at the appointed time the Cardinal electors proceed in procession to the Sistine Chapel while, according to custom, the Litany of the Saints is sung. When the procession reaches the Sistine Chapel, the solemn invocation of the Holy Spirit is made. Then the Cardinal electors pronounce the oath. After the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations has announced "Extra omnes," the second ecclesiastic in charge dictates the second meditation in the presence of the Cardinal electors, on the serious moment of the election of the Roman Pontiff.

29. On the same day as the Mass for the election of the Supreme Pontiff, at a convenient time in the afternoon, the entrance into the Conclave takes place.
30. The Cardinal electors proceed to the Pauline Chapel of the Apostolic Palace to form the procession.
31. Cardinals of the Latin rite wear the red robe and mozzetta with the corresponding sash, rochet, and biretta; Cardinals of the Eastern Churches wear choir dress.
32. When all are assembled, the Cardinal Dean or, if he is absent or legitimately impeded, the Subdean or the Cardinal first in order and seniority begins the rite of entrance into the Conclave by saying:
In nómine Patris et Fílii et Spíritus Sancti.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
The Celebrant:

33. Then the Cardinal presiding over the celebration, turning to those present, says:

Cum sacris litavérimus,
nunc Concláve, ad eligéndum Románum Pontíficem,
ingrediémur.
Ecclésia univérsa, nobis in oratióne commúni coniúncta,
grátiam Spíritus Sancti instánter exórat,
ut dignus Pastor univérsi gregis Christi a nobis eligátur.

Venerable Brothers,
having celebrated the divine mysteries,
we shall now enter into Conclave
for the election of the Roman Pontiff.
The whole Church, united with us in prayer,
constantly invokes the grace of the Holy Spirit,
that there may be chosen by us
a worthy Pastor for the entire flock of Christ.
May the Lord direct our steps in the way of truth,
so that, through the intercession
of the Blessed ever-Virgin Mary,
of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,
and of all the Saints,
we may always do what is pleasing to him.
34. The procession then forms.
The altar server carrying the Cross leads the way. Next come the singers and Masters of Ceremonies, the Secretary of the College of Cardinals, and the cleric who will lead the meditation in the presence of the Cardinal electors.
Then come the Cardinal electors, in order: the Deacons, the Priests, and the Bishops.
Then comes the Deacon, wearing an alb and stole, carrying the Book of the Gospels; lastly, the Cardinal Dean or, if he is absent or legitimately impeded, the Subdean or the senior Cardinal, wearing a stole over his choir dress, accompanied by the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations.
35. As the procession advances, the singers and the congregation sing the litanies in alternating choirs, in which the Saints of the East and West are commemorated.

36. Upon reaching the Sistine Chapel, the Cardinals each take their places. The Book of the Gospels is placed in a suitable and pleasant place to preside over the celebration and the deliberations of the Cardinals until the election of the Roman Pontiff.
37. After the singing of the Litany with the invocations, the Cardinal Dean or, if he is absent or legitimately impeded, the Cardinal first in order and seniority, standing at the altar, intones the hymn "Veni, creátor Spíritus," a solemn invocation of the Holy Spirit.

38. After the chant, the Cardinal presiding over the celebration says:

All pray in silence for a few moments. Then the Celebrant continues:

infúnde, quǽsumus, fámulis tuis
spíritum intellegéntiæ, veritátis et pacis,
ut, quæ tibi plácita sunt, toto corde cognóscant
et ágnita tota virtúte secténtur.

O Father, who guide and safeguard your Church,
grant to your servants
the Spirit of wisdom, of truth, and of peace,

39. After the prayer, the Cardinal electors, in the presence of all those who participated in the solemn procession, will take the oath.
40. The Cardinal Dean or, if he is absent or legitimately impeded, the Subdean or the first Cardinal in order and seniority will pronounce aloud the following oath formula.
The Oath

We, the Cardinal electors present in this election of the Supreme Pontiff promise, pledge and swear, as individuals and as a group, to observe faithfully and scrupulously the prescriptions contained in the Apostolic Constitution of the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II, Universi Dominici Gregis, published on 22 February 1996 (together with the modifications introduced by the Apostolic Letter Normas Nonnullas, issued Motu Proprio by Pope Benedict XVI on 22 February 2013.)
We likewise promise, pledge and swear that whichever of us by divine disposition is elected Roman Pontiff will commit himself faithfully to carrying out the munus Petrinum of Pastor of the Universal Church and will not fail to affirm and defend strenuously the spiritual and temporal rights and the liberty of the Holy See.
In a particular way, we promise and swear to observe with the greatest fidelity and with all persons, clerical or lay, secrecy regarding everything that in any way relates to the election of the Roman Pontiff and regarding what occurs in the place of the election, directly or indirectly related to the results of the voting; we promise and swear not to break this secret in any way, either during or after the election of the new Pontiff, unless explicit authorization is granted by the same Pontiff; and never to lend support or favour to any interference, opposition or any other form of intervention, whereby secular authorities of whatever order and degree or any group of people or individuals might wish to intervene in the election of the Roman Pontiff.
41. Then the individual Cardinal electors, in the order of precedence, will take the oath with the following formula:
Et ego N. Cardinális N.
spóndeo, vóveo ac iuro.
And I, N. Cardinal N.,
do so promise, pledge and swear.
And placing their hands on the Gospel presented to each of them, they will add the following:
Sic me Deus ádiuvet
et hæc Sancta Dei Evangélia,
quæ manu mea tango.
So help me God
and these Holy Gospels
which I touch with my hand.
42. When the last of the Cardinal electors has taken the oath, the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations orders, "Extra omnes." Those who are not participating in the Conclave leave the Sistine Chapel.
43. Then, with the Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations still present, the ecclesiastic elected in accordance with the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, Nos. 13 d) and 52, gives the Cardinal electors a meditation on the very serious task that awaits them and on the need for them to act in all things with right intentions in the election of the Roman Pontiff, seeking to fulfill only the will of God and aiming solely at the good of the whole Church.
44. Once the meditation has concluded, the ecclesiastic who gave it and the Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations leave the Sistine Chapel; the doors are closed and guards are posted at all entrances to the Chapel.
45. Having done this, the Cardinal Dean or his deputy, after consulting the College of Electors, will immediately submit to them the business to be urgently dealt with or will invite them to proceed with the election operations, according to the procedures indicated in No. 54 of the Apostolic Constitution
.
46. This session appropriately closes by invoking the help of the Virgin Mother of God with the singing of the antiphon "Sub tuum præsidium."
