WELCOME

His Eminence Cardinal Jaime L. Sin, Archbishop of Manila, welcomes the Holy Father.

PENITENTIAL RITE

The Holy Father introduces the celebration and the penitential rite:

My dear brothers and sisters,
the establishment and growth of the Church
is such a great gift of God.
In this Mass we are celebrating
the four hundredth year
of the establishment of the Archdiocese of Manila
and the Dioceses of Cebu,
Nueva Segovia and Nueva Caceres.

From a small beginning,
the seeds of faith have borne fruit indeed.
In this celebration, let us pray that the seeds of faith
sown by our forefathers will continue to strengthen us
in our journey in the years to come.
As we prepare to meet our Lord Jesus,
let us acknowledge our failures
and ask for pardon and strength.

After a moment of silence, the Holy Father says:

Lord Jesus, you came to gather the nations
into the peace of God's kingdom: Lord, have mercy.
R. Lord, have mercy. (sung)

Lord Jesus, you come in word and sacrament
to strengthen us in holiness: Christ, have mercy.
R. Lord, have mercy. (sung)

Lord Jesus, you will come in glory
with salvation for your people: Lord, have mercy.
R. Lord, have mercy. (sung)

The Holy Father:
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
R. Amen.

GLORIA

Sung by the choir and assembly in Filipino

OPENING PRAYER

The Holy Father:
God, you have willed that your Church
be the sacrament of salvation for all nations,
so that Christ’s saving work may continue to the end of the ages;
stir up, we pray, the hearts of your faithful
and grant that they may feel a more urgent call
to work for the salvation of every creature,
so that from all the peoples on earth
one family and one people of your own
may arise and increase.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your on,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
R. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING

My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 56: 1. 6-7

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 47: 2-3. 6-7. 8-9

R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy;

SECOND READING

He made Jesus to sit at his right hand in heaven

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 1: 17-23

GOSPEL VENERATION, PROCESSION
AND ACCLAMATION

After the Pope has blessed the Deacon, the latter takes the Book of the Gospel from the altar and raises it aloft for veneration. With the use of candles together with hand and bodily movements, the youth ministers lead the assembly's attention to the Book and help them honor the presence of Christ in his Word.

After a fitting moment of veneration, the Deacon processes to the ambo accompanied by youth ministers and, as the Gospel is proclaimed, the coming to life of the Word is highlighted by an aura of light, beauty and sweet-smelling fragrance of incense.

Meanwhile, the Alleluia is sung by the assembly led by the choir.

Alleluia.

Go and teach all people my gospel
I am with you always, until the end of the world.

Alleluia.

Baptize them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Alleluia.

GOSPEL (in Filipino)

The Deacon:
✠ A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 28: 16-20.
R. Glory to you, O Lord.

While the choir and the assembly sing again the Gospel acclamation, the deacon carries the book of the Gospels to the Holy Father, who, as a sign of reverence, kisses it and blesses the congregation.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

His Eminence Cardinal Ricardo J. Vidal, Archbishop of Cebu, invites the congregation to renew their faith:
Dear brothers and sisters, our faith is a gift from God which we always proclaim and profess. Our faith has strengthened the Church, in particular the Church in the Philippines in the past four hundred years. Today, in the presence of the Holy Father John Paul II, we want to reaffirm our steadfast belief in God and His Church.

The Holy Father:
Do you believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth?
R. Yes, Holy Father, we believe.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord
who was born of the Virgin Mary,
was, crucified, died and was buried,
rose from the dead,
and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
R. Yes, Holy Father, we believe.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting?
R. Yes, Holy Father, we believe.

This is our faith.
This is the faith of the Church.
We are proud to profess it, in Jesus Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

The Holy Father:
Let us pray to God our Father,
who has continually guided and accompanied us
in our journey of faith all these years.
With confidence let us implore him and pray:

R. Lord, hear your people.

PREFACE

Young people carrying long lighted candles, large earthenware vessels of incense, and baskets of flowers move forward the altar steps. Dressed in Filipino native costumes, they remain there during the Eucharistic Prayer as sentinels of the Eucharist.

The Paschal Mystery and the People of God

The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.
R. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is right and just.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

For through his Paschal Mystery,
he accomplished the marvelous deed,
by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death,
summoning us to the glory of being now called
a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a people for your own possession,
to proclaim everywhere your mighty works,
for you have called us out of darkness
into your own wonderful light.

And so, with Angels and Archangels,
with Thrones and Dominions,
and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven,
we sing the hymn of your glory,
as without end we acclaim:

SANCTUS

The choir and the assembly sing the Sanctus.

OPENING GREETING
AND CALL TO CONVERSION

Dear friends,
At the conclusion of the Fifth International Youth Forum,
I am pleased to be here with you
around the altar of the Lord
for the celebration of the Eucharist.

Through you,
I cordially greet the youth of your Countries,
and wish to express to everyone
my affection, my trust and my hope.

Together, let us lift our eyes to the Lord Jesus,
sent by the Father to save the world:
from him let us accept eagerly
the invitation to become his collaborators
in the task of announcing the Good News.

To be able to approach worthily
the table of the Word and the Bread,
let us ask forgiveness for our sins with humility
and place our lives in the mercy of God.

After a short silence, the lector makes the invocations:

Lord, sent by the Father to announce the Good News,
you teach us to deny ourselves
and lose our life in order to save it (Lk 9:12),
have mercy on us.
R. Kyrie, eleison.

 Christ, true priest,
you did not come into the world to be served
but rather to serve us and to give your life (Mk 10:45),
have mercy on us.
R. Kyrie, eleison.

 Lord, fullness of love,
you are the Master who washed our feet
and ordered us to do the same to one another (Jn 13:13-14),
have mercy on us.
R. Kyrie, eleison.

The Holy Father:
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
R. Amen.

INTRODUCTION TO THE CELEBRATION

The Celebrant:
Minamahal kong mga kapatid,
tayo ay nagagalak
dahil babasbasan natin
ang mga Imahen ng ating
Poong Hesus Nazareno.
Poong Hesus Nazareno,
tayo ay tumingin kay Kristong naghahari
kasama ng Ama
at ng Espiritu Santo
magpasawalang hanggan.
R. Amen.
